{"id":64,"date":"2012-10-11T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-11T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/?p=64"},"modified":"2012-10-11T12:30:00","modified_gmt":"2012-10-11T12:30:00","slug":"thinking-of-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/?p=64","title":{"rendered":"Thinking of Spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have always loved planting spring flower bulbs.\u00a0 Even as a teenager, passing by displays at the local nursery or in Home Depot, I would stop\u00a0to see what was available and more likely than not, pick up a package to put in the ground.\u00a0 Daffodils are my absolute favorite flower, but I also really love tulips.<\/p>\n<p>This past\u00a0April,\u00a0J and I took a visit to the Netherlands for our April anniversary.\u00a0 I have always wanted to see the tulip fields.\u00a0 Interestingly, tulips are not native to the Netherlands &#8211; they were imported by Ogier de Busbecq, the ambassador of Ferdinand I to the Sultan of Turkey around 1554, and spread across the continent.\u00a0 For some reason they took off in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-GcHyXe-XlQU\/UG1f-6oR0WI\/AAAAAAAAAdY\/jLQ-HhDzrNc\/s1600\/CIMG5031.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" mea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-GcHyXe-XlQU\/UG1f-6oR0WI\/AAAAAAAAAdY\/jLQ-HhDzrNc\/s320\/CIMG5031.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>As our flight was landing at Schipol Airport, you could see these huge swaths of color dominating the landscape.\u00a0 It was every bit as amazing as I thought it would be.<\/p>\n<p>Near Amsterdam, in the town of Lisse, is the world-famous\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.keukenhof.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Keukenhof Gardens<\/a>, a flower park featuring more than 7 million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.\u00a0 We took a day trip out there to admire all the flowers:<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" mea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-4y0sfIaap2Q\/UG1f3ZmxMFI\/AAAAAAAAAdQ\/y6Qj-etdWnI\/s320\/CIMG5105.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-oZVrngcS-AQ\/UG1gHNXWq2I\/AAAAAAAAAdg\/CTcKhaz2wkE\/s1600\/CIMG5129.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" mea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-oZVrngcS-AQ\/UG1gHNXWq2I\/AAAAAAAAAdg\/CTcKhaz2wkE\/s320\/CIMG5129.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\ufeff  <\/p>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-sBOji9xk0Hk\/UG1gTVSyM6I\/AAAAAAAAAdo\/1pbzpKm-YG0\/s1600\/CIMG5104.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" mea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-sBOji9xk0Hk\/UG1gTVSyM6I\/AAAAAAAAAdo\/1pbzpKm-YG0\/s320\/CIMG5104.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ice cream tulips<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\ufeff  <\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-Qtb_4qaTqw0\/UG1gn7pnlwI\/AAAAAAAAAdw\/E7Z38lAyhws\/s1600\/CIMG5114.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" mea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-Qtb_4qaTqw0\/UG1gn7pnlwI\/AAAAAAAAAdw\/E7Z38lAyhws\/s320\/CIMG5114.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Keukenhof very thoughtfully has several tulip vendors situated within the park, where you can view their color catalogs of tulip bulbs, make your selections, place your order, and those vendors will very helpfully ship those bulbs to you in the fall for planting.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not legal for you to pack the bulbs in your luggage because they must be inspected by USDA inspectors before shipment to the United States, and if you had to carry them back in your luggage you might feel more restrained in your purchasing.\u00a0 By simply filling out the order form and handing over your credit card, buying tulips is virtually painless!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Until\u00a0half of the <strong><span>240<\/span><\/strong> tulip bulbs you ordered show up on your front porch one cool October afternoon:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-wlgouCciwfY\/UG1g5d8V2gI\/AAAAAAAAAd4\/6KjHREbcKx8\/s1600\/CIMG6038.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" mea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-wlgouCciwfY\/UG1g5d8V2gI\/AAAAAAAAAd4\/6KjHREbcKx8\/s320\/CIMG6038.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div>I will say that these bulbs appear to be the healthiest I have ever purchased &#8211; a quick inspection shows they are free of bug damage, rot and mold that have plagued purchases I have made in the U.S.\u00a0 I would hope they would be a higher quality, given the cost associated with them.\u00a0 However, the tulips were ones I had never seen here in the U.S., so they were worth it.\u00a0 To me, anyway.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I can&#8217;t help but think that in 16th century Amsterdam, I might have been a victim of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tulip_mania\" target=\"_blank\">tulip mania<\/a>.\u00a0 Probably not, though.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t play the stock market now, so I would have been unlikely to speculate on the value of something I would be most interested in planting in the ground.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>&#8220;Every person is like a single tulip.\u00a0 While they may blend when together, each one is special in its own light.&#8221;
