{"id":62,"date":"2012-11-07T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-07T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/?p=62"},"modified":"2012-11-07T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-07T12:00:00","slug":"november-harvest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/?p=62","title":{"rendered":"November Harvest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I never would have believed I could be harvesting vegetables in early November.\u00a0 I did a lot of gardening with my grandfather when I was young (or should I say, my grandfather did a lot of gardening and I futzed around, screeched at the sight of tomato worms, and occasionally helped weed) and all my memories of gardening have the season ending in late September or early October.\u00a0 But we almost exclusively grew warm weather crops (cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins) that die off with the first frost.<\/p>\n<p>Not so much with the root vegetables.\u00a0 I must say, I like the plant-&#8217;em-and-forget-&#8217;em aspect of putting seeds in the ground and walking away.\u00a0 I put the carrots and parsnips (first year for those) in the ground in April and have been watching the greens grow merrily all summer.\u00a0 I was\u00a0particularly excited when the greens got big enough to crowd out weeds in the bed, meaning no more weeding. \u00a0The French Breakfast radishes were a second crop in that same bed, planted after the potatoes were harvested and the soil amended.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>This past Sunday I decided to do a crock pot roast with root vegetables.\u00a0 The recipe called for turnips and rutabegas, but I substituted parsnips.\u00a0 This is what I picked out of the frosty ground early Sunday morning:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-fTvfjSwTMeY\/UJeeCiA68cI\/AAAAAAAAAh0\/nsHI7TgzGms\/s1600\/CIMG6108.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" rea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-fTvfjSwTMeY\/UJeeCiA68cI\/AAAAAAAAAh0\/nsHI7TgzGms\/s320\/CIMG6108.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Very impressive.\u00a0 Of course, when you cut off the greens, it&#8217;s not quite so overwhelming:<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-if1hc0VIoRk\/UJeeMTpROSI\/AAAAAAAAAh8\/nMJ0OCHDC6M\/s1600\/CIMG6112.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" rea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-if1hc0VIoRk\/UJeeMTpROSI\/AAAAAAAAAh8\/nMJ0OCHDC6M\/s320\/CIMG6112.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>And you&#8217;re left with an entire basket of greenery for the compost bin:<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-gqCLG0xqpy8\/UJeeS6OCzyI\/AAAAAAAAAiE\/m3Cgcrmulpw\/s1600\/CIMG6114.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" rea=\"true\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-gqCLG0xqpy8\/UJeeS6OCzyI\/AAAAAAAAAiE\/m3Cgcrmulpw\/s320\/CIMG6114.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I am pleased to say the pot roast was a hit, too.\u00a0 Right in line with the do-it-and-forget-it aspect of the vegetables that went into it.\u00a0 I also used a few of the potatoes I harvested from our garden back in August.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The recipe is by Robin Miller, courtesy of Foodnetwork.com:<\/div>\n<h2>Ingredients<\/h2>\n<p><!--concordance-begin--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">1 onion, chopped<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">4 small red potatoes, quartered<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">2 carrots, peeled and chopped<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">1 turnip, peeled and chopped<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">1 rutabaga, peeled and chopped<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">1 (3-pound) chuck roast<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">Salt and ground black pepper<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">3 tablespoons all-purpose flour<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">2\/3 cup brown sugar<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">2 teaspoons chili powder<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">1 teaspoon ground cumin<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">1 teaspoon mustard powder<\/li>\n<li itemprop=\"ingredients\">1 teaspoon garlic powder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--concordance-end--><\/p>\n<h2>Directions<\/h2>\n<div itemprop=\"recipeInstructions\">Arrange onion, potatoes, carrots, turnip, and rutabaga in bottom of slow cooker. Season beef all over with salt and black pepper. Rub flour all over beef. (I skipped this step out of sheer laziness.)\u00a0 Place roast on top of vegetables in slow cooker.\u00a0 Whisk together tomato sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, mustard powder, and garlic powder. Pour mixture over beef. Cover and cook on LOW for 12 hours or on HIGH for 8 hours.\u00a0 Serve 1\/3 of beef and all of the vegetables with this meal.
