{"id":374,"date":"2013-11-08T10:43:22","date_gmt":"2013-11-08T15:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/?p=374"},"modified":"2013-11-08T10:43:22","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T15:43:22","slug":"the-end-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/?p=374","title":{"rendered":"The end&#8230;..for now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I ate the last dozen or so Sungold tomatoes.\u00a0 I would like to note that it is <em>November<\/em>, and this is <em>amazing<\/em>.\u00a0 I would have documented the occasion, but I was at work and forgot my camera.\u00a0 The garden kept going all the way through the second-to-last week of October, finally succumbing to a hard frost somewhere over the nights of October 23rd and 24th.\u00a0 It was a fantastic run.\u00a0 I can only tally what we canned or froze, but here&#8217;s where we stand in our first large-scale effort to preserve our harvest for later use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>22 jars dill pickles<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">5 jars bread and butter pickles<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">12 jars sweet banana peppers<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">4 jars green tomato chutney (hurrah!\u00a0 A use for unripe green tomatoes at the end of the season!)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">56 cups of diced tomatoes<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">8 bags of beans<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">1 bag of peas<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">3 bags of corn<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>3 bags of peppers (jalapeno &amp; Fooled You)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was not a stellar year for either the peas or the corn &#8211; although we did eat some fresh &#8211; but it was an amazing year for tomatoes.\u00a0 We boiled, peeled, seeded &amp; diced those suckers in 2-cup increments and froze them for use in cooking.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve already used about 9 bags so far, and the taste is so much better than even the canned organic tomatoes I normally buy.\u00a0 However, all these frozen vegetables take up a\u00a0bit of room, as you can see:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/image11-e1383922350766.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-391\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/image11-e1383922350766-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/image11-e1383922350766-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/image11-e1383922350766.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There&#8217;s no way to really calculate what we harvested and ate fresh &#8211; over the long weekend of Columbus Day, J harvested about 15 of our Bride eggplants, fire roasted them, and turned them into eggplant dip.\u00a0 We ate one container, and froze the other two for future consumption as the recipe calls exclusively for Asian eggplants and we can&#8217;t get them around here unless we grow them.\u00a0 So we&#8217;ll defrost that container, maybe for New Year&#8217;s, and think longingly of fresh summer vegetables.
