Mostly&#8230;.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, and a great majority of it was spent out in the gardens, putting in the plants. Here&#8217;s what went in this weekend:<\/p>\n<p>Tomatoes (Early Girl, Sungold, Brandywine)<br \/>Eggplants (Dusky, Black Beauty)<br \/>Peppers (red &#038;\u00a0green)<br \/>Summer squash<br \/>Zucchini<br \/>Green beans<br \/>Peas <\/p>\n<p>This is a shot of the main garden this morning:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-t2DpBtrpJLc\/TeUK97NfQwI\/AAAAAAAAAD8\/e9eLC3lwxI0\/s1600\/main_garden_05-31-11%255B1%255D.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-t2DpBtrpJLc\/TeUK97NfQwI\/AAAAAAAAAD8\/e9eLC3lwxI0\/s320\/main_garden_05-31-11%255B1%255D.JPG\" t8=\"true\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Last weekend I planted <br \/>Potatoes<br \/>Shallots<br \/>Carrots (Adelaide)<br \/>Lettuce (Romaine)<\/p>\n<p>And so far, nothing&#8217;s happening.\u00a0 If I remember correctly from last year, germination for the carrots and lettuce takes a bit of time, and the potatoes and shallots are, you\u00a0guessed it, another one of our experiments.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re still waiting for some of our seedlings to be big enough to transplant.\u00a0 Some of them have started to develop their true leaves, but it still might be several weeks before they&#8217;re ready to be moved.\u00a0 Fortunately, most of them will be going in the herb bed and will eventually be covered with a cold frame, prolonging their growing season:<\/p>\n<p>Fennel<br \/>Strawberries (Alpine)<br \/>Basil<br \/>Parsley<br \/>Cilantro<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-n4fdEO6nQ6I\/TeULsegyveI\/AAAAAAAAAEA\/855oxlli15I\/s1600\/herbs_05_31_11%255B1%255D.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-n4fdEO6nQ6I\/TeULsegyveI\/AAAAAAAAAEA\/855oxlli15I\/s320\/herbs_05_31_11%255B1%255D.JPG\" t8=\"true\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>My Home Depot strawberries are doing beautifully.\u00a0 They have already produced some berries that are turning red.\u00a0 I have a long way to go before I&#8217;ll be making jam, however.\u00a0 I am hoping to keep the chipmunk away from them.\u00a0 The garden is fenced, but he&#8217;ll probably just see that as another challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight we&#8217;re going to start the pumpkins and watermelon, and maybe the corn.\u00a0 Plowing the back-40 field has not been easy &#8211; there have been many stops and starts, much to J&#8217;s frustration.\u00a0 It might be another week or two before that field is ready to go.\u00a0 So we&#8217;re going with plan B and starting the seeds indoors.\u00a0 They germinate quickly, meaning that we aren&#8217;t going to lose much time by having to delay our in the ground planting by another week or two.<\/p>\n<p>That photo of the main garden amazes me.\u00a0 When we first decided to plant that space three years ago, we originally guessed we could get four rows across the narrow part of the garden.\u00a0 (In some cases we did, but we had to switch down to three rows in many places.)\u00a0 Now we&#8217;re doing just two, with a path up the middle.\u00a0 I am looking forward to being able to\u00a0move more easily through the garden\u00a0this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;.Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, and a great majority of it was spent out in the gardens, putting in the plants.
