{"id":108,"date":"2011-07-15T18:47:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-15T18:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/?p=108"},"modified":"2011-07-15T18:47:00","modified_gmt":"2011-07-15T18:47:00","slug":"how-does-your-garden-grow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cocktailfarmers.com\/?p=108","title":{"rendered":"How does your garden grow?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, a lot has changed in the garden in the last few weeks.\u00a0 Back on May 31, I posted this picture:<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-YrvL8C4X7_0\/TiCD4mw6FRI\/AAAAAAAAAEo\/cCGjGPNWgVc\/s1600\/main_garden_05-31-11%255B1%255D.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-YrvL8C4X7_0\/TiCD4mw6FRI\/AAAAAAAAAEo\/cCGjGPNWgVc\/s320\/main_garden_05-31-11%255B1%255D.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Looked pretty sad, didn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>This was last night&#8217;s photo:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-EHtxFZ1LCBs\/TiCED1oyuGI\/AAAAAAAAAEs\/xnzL2A0fqe8\/s1600\/CIMG4471.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" m src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-EHtxFZ1LCBs\/TiCED1oyuGI\/AAAAAAAAAEs\/xnzL2A0fqe8\/s320\/CIMG4471.JPG\" width=\"240\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>We&#8217;ve had a string of hot days lately, so that&#8217;s helped enormously.\u00a0 (Also enormously helpful?\u00a0 The Cocktail Farmers were in the Caribbean for my cousin&#8217;s wedding, partaking of tropical frozen drinks at the 2-for-1 Happy Hour.\u00a0 One of the best was called a Tropical Breeze featuring mango puree, strawberry puree, and Midori.\u00a0 When we figure out how to duplicate it, expect to see it here.)<\/p>\n<p>There have been some casualties along the way:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-soW0TsU7ncM\/TiCElus5NmI\/AAAAAAAAAEw\/Qx-0oKGSnrs\/s1600\/CIMG4472.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-soW0TsU7ncM\/TiCElus5NmI\/AAAAAAAAAEw\/Qx-0oKGSnrs\/s320\/CIMG4472.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Just before we left I noticed several of the Brandywine tomato plants had some sort of yellowing blight near the stems.\u00a0 Because they came from a nursery and previous tomato blight infestations have been linked to nursery plants, I ruthlessly ripped them out before we left.\u00a0 Nothing, NOTHING must interfere with the Sungold tomatoes, further down the row.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ll sacrifice everything else in the garden for those.\u00a0 The bonus in ripping out the plants was that I discovered the subterranean watering system J put in the garden is working, and the roots are reaching down into the soil rather than spreading out along the surface.\u00a0 So that was a decent consolation prize.<\/p>\n<p>So far everything else is hanging in there.\u00a0 We have lots of zucchini coming in &#8211; in fact, we harvested the first one before we left and gave it to our neighbor, and picked three more on Wednesday.\u00a0 But they keep coming:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-jYZMFs9_R3c\/TiCFmCi09jI\/AAAAAAAAAE0\/o4n9YWawRFw\/s1600\/CIMG4476.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-jYZMFs9_R3c\/TiCFmCi09jI\/AAAAAAAAAE0\/o4n9YWawRFw\/s320\/CIMG4476.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>As do the summer squash:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-C9SYYR4pOrY\/TiCFueMJq2I\/AAAAAAAAAE4\/c3VpU42xSEY\/s1600\/CIMG4477.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-C9SYYR4pOrY\/TiCFueMJq2I\/AAAAAAAAAE4\/c3VpU42xSEY\/s320\/CIMG4477.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span>This one has my dad&#8217;s name written all over it<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And we&#8217;re starting to see tomatoes, too:<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-Y7c_Wf7WU-c\/TiCGD2vogrI\/AAAAAAAAAE8\/1A8YtYQWvnI\/s1600\/CIMG4473.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-Y7c_Wf7WU-c\/TiCGD2vogrI\/AAAAAAAAAE8\/1A8YtYQWvnI\/s320\/CIMG4473.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span>\u00a0Early Girl<\/span><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-oaIX93CWcZY\/TiCGHmewU9I\/AAAAAAAAAFA\/1RgbSJ3AZEc\/s1600\/CIMG4479.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-oaIX93CWcZY\/TiCGHmewU9I\/AAAAAAAAAFA\/1RgbSJ3AZEc\/s320\/CIMG4479.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span>Sungold flower buds, soon to be crack&#8230;I mean, tomatoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And beans!\u00a0 Last year we put in about a half dozen plants, transplanted from the seed starting trays, and got enough for one meal for the two of us.\u00a0 This year?\u00a0 Directly into the ground, 1 inch apart and I planted 40 of them.\u00a0 36 came up:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-CeuJ_Ho6KWE\/TiCGwoWi0KI\/AAAAAAAAAFE\/SVdswI6QfyQ\/s1600\/CIMG4483.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" m src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-CeuJ_Ho6KWE\/TiCGwoWi0KI\/AAAAAAAAAFE\/SVdswI6QfyQ\/s320\/CIMG4483.JPG\" width=\"240\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-x_hqG1i6fNU\/TiCGzjeo3cI\/AAAAAAAAAFI\/AAIKQI-VKMg\/s1600\/CIMG4486.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-x_hqG1i6fNU\/TiCGzjeo3cI\/AAAAAAAAAFI\/AAIKQI-VKMg\/s320\/CIMG4486.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>We&#8217;re going to have bushels of beans this year, if things continue as they have been.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t wait.\u00a0 Last year nobody else got any, because there simply weren&#8217;t enough to share.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/laughcooklove.wordpress.com\/\">Stella Caroline<\/a> will come up with some fantastic side dish for them.\u00a0 (She is both a fabulous cook and a tremendous baker.\u00a0 Seriously &#8211; when she brings me something there is the internal struggle to listen to the angels of my better nature and share with J.\u00a0 I do, but boy, I really, <em>really<\/em> don&#8217;t want to share her yummy treats.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know her when I married J, because if I did the marriage vows probably would have included a line about sharing pastry.\u00a0 Instead we recited a Navajo Wedding Blessing, which does not include a reference to caramel chocolate matzo.\u00a0 That <em>alone<\/em> entitles her to one of my kidneys.\u00a0 And one of J&#8217;s.)<\/p>\n<p>Our experiment with peas is so-so.\u00a0 They look a little feeble, and we put them in kind of late:<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-UBeldu4cYgg\/TiCJFUDkzTI\/AAAAAAAAAFM\/lFs_yyON22M\/s1600\/CIMG4484.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-UBeldu4cYgg\/TiCJFUDkzTI\/AAAAAAAAAFM\/lFs_yyON22M\/s320\/CIMG4484.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>We do have one ENORMOUS pea pod, however.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Slp8CAgEgvE\/TiCJI8ZCnEI\/AAAAAAAAAFQ\/fQRmbJjvSZk\/s1600\/CIMG4485.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" m src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Slp8CAgEgvE\/TiCJI8ZCnEI\/AAAAAAAAAFQ\/fQRmbJjvSZk\/s320\/CIMG4485.JPG\" width=\"240\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>We&#8217;re just not sure there are any peas in it.\u00a0 There are buds on the plants, though, so hope springs eternal&#8230;.like death, taxes, and the neighbor&#8217;s cat needing to nap right in the way:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-aLX4ZaYEID8\/TiCJ0z5gudI\/AAAAAAAAAFU\/Jnj3upSFmjQ\/s1600\/CIMG4468.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" m src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-aLX4ZaYEID8\/TiCJ0z5gudI\/AAAAAAAAAFU\/Jnj3upSFmjQ\/s320\/CIMG4468.JPG\" width=\"320\"><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, a lot has changed in the garden in the last few weeks.\u00a0 Back on May 31, I posted this picture: Looked pretty sad, didn&#8217;t it?
